Trainer Darren Weir has indicated that top-class galloper Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) may target the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in the autumn.

Black Heart Bart established himself as one of the best racehorses in Australia with Gr1 victories in the Memsie Stakes and Underwood Stakes in the spring, before signing off his campaign with a below-par 9th in the Cox Plate.

“He’s come through his Cox Plate run well. He had a little abscess burst out of his foot but that has come good,” Weir told Melbourne’s Radio Sport National.

“We will just target the shorter distances with him. He’s out having a well-earned rest at the moment.”

He added: “The owner is keen [to target the Newmarket] so it might be on the cards I think.” Black Heart Bart finished a close-up second to The Quarterback in this year’s edition of the Newmarket.
